Who are we?

The Life & Deaf Association is a voluntary not-for-profit organisation. We are not currently able to undertake any new projects.
Jane Thomas and Katie Ford are specialist speech and language therapists who between them have worked for 25 years with deaf children and young people, mostly in the Royal Borough of Greenwich. Helena Ballard is an experienced, retired teacher of the deaf who worked in Greenwich for 15 years and before that worked in Newham. Andrew Burgess managed the Royal Borough of Greenwich Sensory Service until very recently and continues to work as a teacher of the deaf. John Ballard, a retired civil servant, is our treasurer and Andy Ford, an electronic engineer and project manager, is our technical advisor.
We are delighted and honoured to have Josette Simon OBE as our Patron.
In addition to the core team we regularly call on the help of professionals, family and friends who generously give of their time – see ‘Partners’.
Fellow professionals from across the UK have supported Life & Deaf by encouraging their students to submit poetry to the website and by bringing them along to the workshops.
