Life and Deaf II - Latest news!
|
|
- You can still submit poems!
- It is not too late!
- The deadline is Christmas 2010
- We need more inventive, original, thoughtful poems to show us what being Deaf is really like
- Use our workbook to get started, then let your creativity flow
- No poem is too short, too angry or too funny!
After Christmas, a small panel of judges will select poets - we hope they will represent different levels of deafness, different communication modes, different emotions, additional needs and different experiences of Deafness.
We have obtained funding to run this new project from Greenwich Children’s Services, so:
- We have booked a wonderful room in Greenwich Old Naval College.
- Our first day will be on Friday 20th May 2011 for our neighbouring boroughs, Lewisham, Bromley, Bexley
- Our UK wide day will be on Thursday 14th July 2011.
- On each day, we have booked committed, fun, professionals to lead the following workshops:
- Using your voice and performing
- Performing your poem in sign language
- Illustrating your poem
- Looking good! (make up and styling ready for the camera)
- Each chosen poet will take part in each of these workshops.
- There will be in-house photography and film on the day to record the poets’ performances and give a flavour of the event.
We have also commissioned a well-known film maker to make a professional short film, using the poetry created by the children to visually represent their identities as young deaf people.
Explore this website for more information or contact us.
WE LOOK FORWARD TO LOTS MORE GREAT POEMS SOON!

The children and young peoples services award
|
|
"Life & Deaf is a great example of how committed professionals can make a huge and lasting difference to children and young people’s lives. It saw a group of profoundly deaf children and young people aged six to nineteen embark on a poetry project, which culminated in the publication of a book and a DVD of poetry performed in British Sign Language.
The project was led by specialist speech and language therapists Jane Thomas and Katie Martin from Greenwich Teaching Primary Care Trust. They worked closely with many other professionals in education, health, social care and creative fields across the public and private sector.
Children and young people were involved at every stage of the project, which aimed to see deafness through their eyes."
